Good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity. - Max Turner.

Effective communication is perhaps the most powerful arrow in an individual's quiver. And few skills are as important as appropriate expression and communication for the young mind as they learn to make sense of the world around them. But how much of the onus of imparting communication skills and encouraging effective communication is on teachers and educationists with whom an average Indian student spends approximately 900 hours in a school year?

To probe this issue further, the Smart Vocab Challenger Guild held its bi-annual Round Table, in association with explorEd, on the 17th of July, 2020. Ms. Vaneet Kaur, Ms. Jyoti Gulati and Ms. Isha Khera from our school participated in the event. The elite panel deliberated on the topic 'As educationists, how can we infuse consciousness for effective communication?'

Led by a panel of dynamic and passionate teachers and educationists from across the country, the panelists touched upon the myriad perspectives which are shaping the manner in which smarter vocabulary and communication are being fostered in the academic environment. They also touched upon the fact as to should the children be allowed to use bilingual language while speaking English or should the purity of the language be maintained and how by means of theatre the love for English language can be fostered in children. It was an enlightening experience.

"Education begins the moment we see children as innately wise and capable beings. Only then can we play along in their world." - Vince Gowmon.

It is fundamentally essential for children to learn English from a very young age. A Webinar on 'English for young Learners' was conducted by Ratna Sagar for Classes I to V on 3 July 2020. The resource person, Ms. Sangita Kanjilal shared wonderful activities on how we can teach English to children. In an effective classroom, students should not only know what they are doing, they should also know why and how. So, in this context, we as teachers should let the children prove their own rules rather than mugging up. Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourth theatre, so, we must have role plays. It would enhance their creativity and language. As we all know that children learn better through actions and activities so classes should be more activity based. So, to conclude she emphasised that teaching to children is not an easy job. But it s also not difficult, if we already know how to do.

On 19 June 2020, our school organised a workshop with the view to educate the students of Class X about Cyber Security. We well understand the fact that in the present era, it has become imperative to ensure that children fully understand their digital profile, as well as the devices and applications they use daily. The fact is that internet based devices put them at risk of being compromised by cyber criminals. With a wide array of fun games and educational material just one click away, the internet has become a valuable and extremely important resource in every child's life. Many aspects of a child's life, including school and communicating with friends are dependent on devices that are connected to the internet. Unfortunately, cyber criminals are aware of this and often target kids for their own benefit.

The resource person for the Cyber Security Workshop was Ms. Heena Ansari, who began her career as a teacher in Bi llabong High International School in 2010. She has worked as a Curriculum Designer and spearheaded projects to design the curriculum and content for the SSC, CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE boards, for both government aided and non aided institutions. She has expertise in training and has traveled across India to train diverse audiences ranging from academicians to corporate clients. She kept the workshop on Cyber Security extremely informative and interactive, addressing the doubts of all the students in the most knowledgeable and patient manner.

Our resource person shared with the students some best practices that should be incorporated into every child's internet usage to ensure that they are safe, secure and maintain their privacy online.

She educated the children that personal information should never be g iven out online without parents’ permission. She also reminded the students that passwords are meant to be kept private. It is also important to act with the assumption that anything that gets posted on a social media site will remain on the internet forever. She told the students to always remember that one should never meet strangers from the internet in person. Furthermore, cyber bullying is becoming one of the biggest risk out there for kids. Thus, it is important to give children the confidence to stand up to cyber bullying as well as to teach them that they should never send or respond to insulting messages. The workshop made one realize that we live in a time where internet use is not only common, it is also expected and for that reason it is important not to scare children away from using the internet. The internet is a valuable resource that children will learn how to best use overtime and it is important to educate and equip children with the skills required to practice good judgment when interacting in the cyber world.

Fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias that people face. But this skill of effective public speaking can be learned and even mastered over time and keeping this purpose in mind our school organized a summer holiday activity for students of Class IX. Ms. Samridhi Sagar, editor with Ratna Sagar who is an influential communication strategist and trainer conducted one hour online session for our students on 18.6.2020. She explained the students about the importance of preparedness about the content which one wants to deliver. Success of any public speaking depends on as a speaker steps on the platform. A speaker must convince his audience in first few minutes only that their time is not going to be wasted. Resource person suggested few techniques which must be adopted to be a good speaker. Voice modulation plays an important role to maintain the attention of audience. Ms. Samridhi mentioned about OREO technique that can be adopted by a good speaker. A good speaker is required to paint a picture before his audience through story telling.

Students also learnt that the public speaking skill not only boosts the confidence but also helps in making new social connections. This activity certainly helped to bring positive changes in the personality of students.

“We are all hungry and thirsty for concrete images. Abstract art will have been good for one thing: to restore its exact virginity to figurative art.” - Salvador Dali.

Abstract painting is considered one of the purest forms of expression, as it allows its creator to freely communicate visually without the constraint of forms found in objective reality.

To empower our students with this powerful medium of expression our school organised a workshop on abstract painting for the students of Class VIII. They used bright colours to paint flower composition and to paint a landscape scene soothing colours were used.

The workshop helped create interest in students to learn a new technique or medium in Art and enhance their creativity.

Crucial to abstract art is the rejection of three-dimensional perspective and it encourages 'out-of-box' thinking which is essential for the all round development of children in their formative years.

“For every lock, there is someone out there trying to prick it or break in“ - David Bernstein.

Privacy is one of the most valuable attributes to human beings. In times like now when almost everything is run and controlled by the internet, concern about self protection has engulfed all us netizens. The society is moving in the direction of the most advanced technology available, we must not undervalue the gravity of the consequences that awaits us. Thousands of predators with the slightest of knowledge about hacking await us to make one mistake allowing them to steal our personal information online. With the pandemic around, schools transformed their physical classes to a complete virtual set up, making it imperative to ponder and act upon this thought.

NIPCCID organized a Webinar on Cyber Safety of Children for Law and Enforcement Agencies and School Teachers on 30th May 2020. The event was attended by our School Counsellors Ms. Neha Dutta and Ms. Richa Arora.

Distinguished panelist from Delhi Judiciary, Police, Delhi High Courts and Cyber Security Experts shared important practical information pertaining to 'SAFE USE OF INTERNET'. The panel members were esteemed professionals like Mr. Rakshit Tandon Cyber Security Expert, Mr. Shashank Shekhar, Advocate High Court. The discussion revolved around the wide level of exposure available to children of all age without much supervision. They are exposed to certain apps, games and social platforms which may not be age appropriate at all. They even know how to access the same without getting noticed by their parents and authority figures.

Children today engage in unhealthy and lawfully punishable acts like threatening or abusing others using a fake account and other such eventually land up being a cyber bully or a victim to the same issues themselves. Reporting of incidents related to privacy breaching, cyber bullying, misuse of memes for body shaming are increasing rapidly.

The speaker also suggested the schools to modify their curriculum, organize workshops and trainings to equip teachers and students to be able to exercise their right to report and block unforeseen incidences, to have a know-how to secure their accounts and change their security setting of the various platforms like facebook, instagram, whatsapp and much more. Also to be aware of cyber laws, IPC Act and other such legal provisions that look after such cyber incidents, tracking digital printing and punishments. Parents are also advised to strictly allow their children to attend virtual classes and use internet only under adult supervision.

The parents are struggling to keep pace with technological advancements, the students are still getting used to this format of E- learning, and the teachers are bridging all gaps to ensure a smooth transaction of education. The entire educational fraternity has been hit hard by this jolt of the Covid-19 pandemic, yet each day, we are overcoming struggles and trying to adapt ourselves to virtual learning that has now become a reality.

While we have retreated into a cocoon away from live, personalised classroom learning, the management of all schools acts as the anchor to ensure that we keep our heads above water in these challenging times.

In one such attempt, the publishing house Ratna Sagar, organised a webinar titled : Evolving Paradigms - The Road Ahead, headed by esteemed panelists of top Delhi schools, one of them being our honourable CEO and Chairperson Ms. Anjali Aggarwal, who along with others discussed the multiple facets of education during the ongoing pandemic and the many challenges it is throwing at the education sector.

Aggarwal ma’am spoke on the pressing need of a revised curriculum and how this academic session stands singular and incomparable to the bygone sessions. While maintaining ground on the 10th and 12th standard syllabus, which can be less meddled with by the schools as it is restricted to the directions of the educational board, ma’am gave out a skeleton framework, where the schools can moderate the curriculum for classes upto the 8th standard. A revised academic calendar, minimising cultural events, squeezing the exam time, and giving up on excessive frills were a few suggestions by our honorary speaker.

The highly informative session, attended by our staff members - Ms. Neeru Monga, Ms. Jeetu Bhalla, Ms. Swati Vats, Ms. Divya Magotra, Ms. Disha Seth and Ms. Shumita, highlighted the importance of the learners’ initiative and their ethics and values and resilience that would make this process a smooth and adaptable one. Now education can’t only be content based but has to be self assessed. It is now that we need to think out of the box and learn to be knowledgeable than only to score marks. To prevent ourselves from falling into this existential crisis, the entire educational fraternity needs to put in their efforts so as to yield maximum benefit from it. Concluding on an appreciative note for the teachers, Aggarwal ma’am showed her great faith and gratitude for the educators, boosting their morale and realising their eminent role in the learning process.

“What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor and more unashamed conversation” – Glenn Close.

With a view to building resilient minds, Fortis Healthcare organised an Online Summer Internship Program for Psychology students of Class XI-XII. It was spearheaded by the renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Samir Parikh over a span of two weeks - 11 May to 23 May 2020. The internship brought into light different issues each day - from creating awareness regarding the dearth of the mental health experts in the country to helping the children cope up with their roller coaster of emotions using art- based therapies. The students found themselves making good use of their time during this lockdown by addressing a less-talked about issue like mental health, through the social media platforms. They were asked to initiate a social media project wherein they were asked to create pages on instagram to promote mental health awareness, bust the myths related to the field and provide a safe space for healthy conversations. They were also encouraged to explore the fields of Health Psychology along with an experiential understanding of the notion of 'self'. As long as such budding mental health initiatives help in fostering a change and encouraging dialogue regarding this grave issue, we can expect a brighter and more positive future.

“Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” - David Kolb

COE, CBSE organized a workshop titled “Kolb’s Experiential Cycle and its Applications” on 20th May, 2020. The resource person for the workshop was Ms. Anupama Dhawan and was attended by Ms. Deepika Khera, Ms. Jyoti Gulati and Ms. Gunjan Grover.

In times like these where knowledge is available in abundance, and the means to acquire such knowledge are vast, teachers should not merely treat their students as empty cups to be filled with words written in a book. It should be the aim of every teacher to utilize the already lived experiences of the students to create new lessons.

The workshop focused on creating vibrant and participative classrooms for inculcating experience based learning into students with different learning styles. The resource person went on to explain how this experiential learning moves in steps i.e. Experience, Reflection, Generalization and Application. The experiential education model is an enriching circle as the steps involved go around each other to create new concrete experiences.

This kind of learning based on experiences not only helps teachers to cater to different learning styles but also helps in making their students more empowered.

CBSE Centre for Excellence organized a webinar on Multiple Disabilities on 14.05.2020 which was attended by our teachers, Ms. Divya Bajaj, Ms. Rakhi, Ms. Sukriti and Ms. Kanika. The major role of the teachers is to identify the type of disability the child is suffering from and develop teaching strategies accordingly. He emphasized that the teacher should be able to identify the disability as early as possible i.e. early intervention should be there so that the child can be helped to develop to his full potential. Each student with multiple disabilities has his or her own set of skills, strengths and learning needs and right modifications and accommodations in the classrooms can help them grow efficiently. Hence, teachers should support them beyond the confines of classroom. The session was highly insightful and informative wherein the spokesperson clearly supported the idea of inclusive classroom teaching where the kids with multiple disabilities also blossom with other kids.

Therefore, we as teachers need to be challenged, to not to see them as children with disability but as children who have potential, and will continue to bloom.

“A gender-equal society would be one where the word ‘gender’ does not exist: where everyone can be themselves.” - Gloria Steinem.

With growing concern over the lack of ‘gender sensitization’ among youth, CBSE Centre of Excellence organized a webinar on Gender Sensitivity in Classroom Environment on 14th May 2020. It was surely an eye opener webinar for us – where we learnt how we can be reflective and objective in our outlook and use gender-neutral language. So we can all build environments that are free of gender bias and encourage male and female both to reach their highest potentials in work and abilities.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
