Social Distancing from Social Media

"Posting less, doing more, comparing less, reflecting more, declaring less accomplishing more" - Anonymous

With the unfortunate events of people requiring social distancing, it has pushed more people into using social media. The past few weeks have seen major changes in people’s lives and routines across the globe. With many of us self-isolating to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, our collective attention is turning to online social platforms in an unprecedented way.

But just like every coin has two sides, there is a flip side of using the social media in an exaggerated manner.

To raise awareness on this important topic ST. MARKS GIRLS SCHOOL organised a workshop conducted by the schoolcounsellor’s Ms. Neha Dutta and Ms. Richa Arora for grade 10th students. The session focused on creating and maintaining a DIGITAL HYGIENE which includes managing the time spent and the quality of data shared on these public platforms. It is about time to realise and decide how much is enough for us. The students enthusiastically participated and enjoyed the session thoroughly.

It is rightly said - "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember."

We can't deny the fact that visual learning helps us to store information for a longer period of time. The parents of Classes Seedling to 1 attended an interesting live session titled “NEVER PUT THE FLASHCARDS AWAY!” by author 'Sonia Relia'.

The resource person emphasized that flashcards are one of the classic study tools, and they promote studying through active recall, which is one of the practices through which our brains learn most effectively. When it comes to children, flashcards help them improve their visual memory and their ability to understand.

The session helped the parents to understand how to leverage and optimize the use of flashcards with children. They learnt different ways by which flashcards could be used for the development of language and numeracy skills. It was a great interactive workshop.

Origami is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices.

Origami as an art reaches back thousands of years. “Origami is really almost as old as paper,” - it means “to fold paper” in Japanese - To start making shapes like cranes and frogs, it boils down to two basic techniques: mountain folds and valley folds, which are different ways to make the edges meet. After that, you can get creative.

To teach this form of art Ms. Ayumi Sawada, owner of an English and Art School named DORONKOART situated in Kobe, Japan joined hands with the students of Class 7 of St. Mark's Girls Sr. Sec. School in two online sessions held on two different days.

As Ms. Ayumi guided each and very fold with great patience, slowly and steadily... students also got a chance to learn the art at their own pace.

A lot of interaction happened between the students and Ms. Ayumi. To the delight of the students, their teacher very politely and humbly agreed to teach them an origami jumping frog on their recommendation.... and the story did not get over there as at the end of both the sessions students were adeptly giving shape to square sheets of paper and turning them into a dog, a chick, a butterfly and a lotus too.

Ms. Ayumi with her apt knowledge of the craft was so inspiring to the students that many of them came up with their own shapes like a rabbit and a dinosaur.

It was an interesting and an enjoyable experience for the learners as well as the teacher.

The session came to an end with lot of gratitude from the students towards their stoic teacher and the students were showered with appreciation by the teacher for their impeccable work.

FORTIS BULLY TO BUDDY PROGRAM

Bullying is not restricted to physical or verbal aggression, but involves any act of intentional harm to the other individual, which could be in the form of verbal harassment, methods of coercion, manipulation, teasing, gossiping, or even singling out or isolating a single person. Keeping this in mind, Dept. of Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences at Fortis Healthcare conducted the “Bully to Buddyworkshop for students of Class XI and XII. It helped in reaching out to a large number of students – not just educating them about bullying, but empowering them with the ability to identify and recognize such incidents, and be aware of the next steps involved in dealing with the same. Bully to Buddy program focussed on training an anti-bullying squad consisting of a team of students, who subsequently conduct an activity based experiential learning session with their own peers, finally concluded with a one-hour booster session. Through this initiative, both children and teachers learn and reflect on bullying behaviour, its causes, consequences, and its maintaining factors including the impact of bystanders. The far-reaching impact of the program can be clearly reflected in the letters that the children wrote to their bullies as an activity within the program. The workshop also helped to establish an understanding of what bullying really is and how is it manifested in our behaviour, as until they are correctly able to identify incidents, any efforts towards preventing or dealing with the challenges associated with bullying would be futile.
