We all have a responsibility to protect endangered species, both for their sake and for the sake of our future generations.

Wild animals play an important role in the ecosystem they reside and help in maintaining ecological balance in nature. Due to the excessive use of resources and cutting of forests, many of these species are now at the brink of extinction. It is the sole responsibility of human beings, on an individual basis, to try and conserve our endangered wildlife. In order to spread awareness about protection of endangered species amongst children, an activity was conducted for Classes 4 & 5 by our School’s Animal Welfare ClubAASHREY’, wherein they had to make a book cover depictingendangered animals and ways to protect these animals. The children enjoyed the activity and created beautiful book covers.

World Rhino Day is celebrated every year on 22 September. It provides an opportunity to work towards saving the animal, which has been the target of poachers for decades. To highlight the importance of this day 'Aashrey' - Animal Welfare Club of our school organised Poster making and Slogan Writing activities for students of Classes VI - XII. These activities helped students to learn and understand that the life of an animal is in no way less precious than our own. The day is celebrated to spread awareness, to protect ecological balance and to protect wildlife, especially the five existing species of Rhino which are living in Africa and Asian continents.

Through their posters and slogans students appealed people for not buying Rhino horn products as the illegal trade in Rhino horn poses the greatest threat to Rhinos.

Elucidating the theme of the World Rhino Day, our budding artists portrayed different types of Rhinos and the ones that are vulnerable to extinction.

Migration is a huge feat of endurance requiring great strength and stamina. However, today birds face additional threats caused by human activity. Hungry, exhausted birds may arrive at a stopover site, only to find that it has been destroyed by farming or urbanisation. Every year, millions of birds are illegally killed by hunters, or collide with man-made structures such as powerlines. And climate change is causing habitats to shift or disappear. In order to spread awareness regarding the same, students of Classes V and VI together with 'Aashrey' Animal Welfare Club of our school celebrated 'World Migratory Bird Day'.

The students collected the information regarding the Migratory birds coming to India in winter and summer seasons, their countries of origin, names, habits, sanctuaries and states etc. This information was weaved in the form of a story and then represented through a comic strip. These beautifully created comic strips highlighted the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats in order to save threatened migratory species from extinction.

Aashrey Animal Welfare Club - save birds from heat.

Summers are cruel to all alike, but birds find it harder to survive the heat without shade or water to quench their thirst. Birds fly for miles to get to a water body and many die before they get any closer. Though it might not be possible to provide water and food to the birds but it is well within our reach. In a collective initiative with 'Aashrey' Animal Welfare Club of St. Marks Girls Sr. Sec. School, the students of Classes VI to VIII made attractive clay pots to feed water to the passing by birds. The students filled these pots with water and kept them in their balconies, terraces along with Bajra (millet), rice etc. for their tiny little guests to feast on. It was a very useful activity in the summer heat as it not only provided water to the birds but also arouse a compassionate and empathetic feeling amongst the students.

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."

Human concern for animal welfare is based on awareness that animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well being. It also includes how human activities affect the survival of endangered species.

Connecting one's soul and spirit, Animal Welfare Club 'AASHREY' of our school has been committed to motivate school children to be sympathetic and empathetic towards animals. As a club, we volunteer an appropriate amount of time to the humane society and other causes. Additionally, we screen thought provoking documentaries, power-point presentations in order to inculcate the very virtue of empathy and kindness towards animals. Various rallies and animal days celebrations are conducted to spread awareness about the protection and care for animals.

Last but not the least, visits to bird sanctuaries, animal welfare shelters gives a positive and informative environment for discussing animal welfare issues with the fellow animal lovers.

Some activities undertaken under the aegis of Aashrey are :

Debates on protection and care for animals, celebration of important days for animals through various activities, excursions to bird sanctuaries animal welfare centres, rallies and workshops on say no to kite flying etc. and in the coming time, we aspire to celebrate - national farm animals awareness week covering interesting facts for farm animals around the world and their role play, World Animal Daythrough displays, enactment and debates, visit to Sanjay Gandhi Animal Shelter to mark National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week, World Wildlife Conservation through thought provoking documentary on wildlife conservation and a visit to a zoo, Birds week through building nests for birds, ppt on interesting facts about butterflies and avisit ti sultanpur bird sanctuary will be conducted.
