St. Markian of Janakpuri continuing the tradition of sharing, caring pooled in Rs. 2,92,647/- for donating to SOS Children's Villages of India. This organization has worked towards the welfare of parentless and abandoned children, communities, disaster struck and disaster prone areas, giving hope to weary communities PAN India. The cheque was handed over by our Principal Ms. Alka Kher to Ms. Shilpa Bisht, vertical head, individual partnership, looking after retention donor relations, PAN India from SOS Children’s villages of India.

The following students convinced their parents to donate large heartedly:

"GENEROSITY IS A GIFT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD TO GIVE"

MUSKAAN & PRERNA NIKETAN are NGO's associated with our school for many years. We are always delighted to provide a platform to them for exhibiting and selling the handmade products specially prepared for festivities during Diwali by their children and staff.

Our students and staff happily bought candles, handmade cards, gifts, pickles,cakes,spices and many other things as a beautiful gesture of kindness and generosity in support of the NGO's social work.

Flood Relief Campaign was carried on with enthusiasm and humility for the flood effected people of North & North-East India through the NGO - GOONJ.

The school contributed stitched clothes for the needy as our humble contribution towards the social cause.

This mission is to build families for children in need, helps to shape their own future and share in the development of their communities.

Students of our school visited SOS Children Village of India at Bawana on 30th July 2016 accompanied by Ms. Deepa Haruray and Mr. Manoj Kumar Mishra.

Unforeseen calamities are not an uncommon phenomenon in the times we live in. To extend a helping hand to our fellow citizens in the hour of crisis and sharing our resources to recoup from the loss of material things is the least one can do as our contribution towards social responsibility. Students from Classes I to XII and staff members of our school generously contributed to mitigate the material loss of the flood affected people of Chennai and thereby express our solidarity in the hour of need. They contributed their might on 29 December 2015 by giving various food articles like rice, sugar, pulses, salt, wheat flour, tea etc. This initiative also sensitized the kids to contribute as much as possible to alleviate the sufferings of needy and bring some happiness to them.

The Teach India Programme : School Chapter was started in 2013 and we joined the programme on May 2014. The first batch of Teach India Programme : School Chapter Summer Cycle was conducted successfully which followed by second batch, winter cycle from January 2015.

On 23rd April 2015, to recognize the efforts of our future change maker that helped people to dream bigger and achieve their aspiration, a convocation was held at Ghalib Auditorium, where our students were awarded and applauded by Deputy Commissioner (Delhi) Mr. O. P. Mishra and other eminent guests from The Times Group and British Council.

Schools in coordination with NGO Goonj organized a campaign to help the less privileged children of the society. Students came out in full force and donated their old books (in good condition) stationary items, toys, shoes, school bags generously.

This helping the less privileged sections of society and also understanding the importance of sharing.

SMS, Janakpuri - The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards - 2012 : Click to EnlargeSt. Markian's of Janakpuri showed their commitment towards social understanding and responsibility by contributing blankets, woollens and other household materials for Kashmir Flood Relief Camp.

The staff members donated one day salary towards Prime Minister's Relief Fund to help the flood affected people of Kashmir.

The cheque was handed over to Sh. Ashish Sood, Councillor, SDMC, West Janakpuri, New Delhi by the school chairman, Mr. T.P. Aggarwal.
TEACH INDIA : SCHOOL CHAPTER

As part of “Teach India Project” nine students from classes X and XI were selected to be a part of this project from our school for PHASE-II.

The project was strategically planned for a wider reach. For this purpose nine students were grouped in three segments i.e. group 1,2,3 and were given different responsibilities.

Group One : Volunteered for “Spoken English Segment of the project where they conducted classes for spoken English for the support staff of the school and made their fundamental strong. Group Two took the mantle of reaching out to the people i.e. community mobilization and motivated a large section of people (by going out to their homes) to learn English for better future prospects and the people understood their point of view.

The III segment dealt in spreading the information by the use of technological media. Thus they prepared blogs, videos & picture to give shape to the work done by their fellow team mates of ‘Teach India Project’ and gave a concrete shape to the project with the help of their teacher incharge Ms. Deepa Haruray, the volunteers for this project are the following :

Celebrating Diwali in a meaningful way - on the occasion of Diwali, two NGOs Muskaan and Prerna Niketan Sangh displayed their handicrafts and hand made materials such as diyas, candles, greeting cards, picles, spices etc. in the school premises. Teachers and students gave their contribution and encouraged them by buying the Diwali producets from their stalls.

SOS has been an integral part of our lives and we in St. Mark’s believe in the philosophy of “SHARING & CARING” especially for those who need us.

To put our this pious belief of “sharing & Caring” into action the SMS family collected a huge amount of Rs. 3,23,590/- with the firm belief to send a helping hand to the children of SOS villages of India and to give wings to their dreams.

Students of our school from classes VI to X got a chance to visit the children of SOS village at Bawana. They interacted & shared with them their experiences & heard theirs. Seeing these children at close quarters taught them to serve others before themselves. Thus the entire experience gave them a lasting memory of which will remain with them forever.

GOONJ is a NGO that tries to find unique solution to the problems faced by thousands of remote village school, which lack infrastructure and basic facilities, critical for a child to have basic experience of schooling. Our students collected stationeries, toys, books, water bottles and many more things and tried to help Goonj in their ‘School to School' (S2S) initiative and extended our helping hand to address the need of thousands of remote & resource starved villages / slum schools.
The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards
The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards is an annual nationwide search to identify and recognize school students who have made a positive difference in their communities through voluntary community service.

In Delhi an eminent jury panel interviewed the three group finalists and selected one from among them. Keerathpal Sawhney of X-A of SMS Janak Puri won Bronze medal for his selfless service towards the betterment of society and also for his proactive role as an Eco warrior. All the students received certificates of Excellence.
Visit to S.O.S Children Village, Bawana - (27 July 2013)
Students of our school visited S.O.S. Village on 27th July 2013. They had an opportunity to see for themselves children who are less privileged staying in a community under the guidance of a warden who acts as their mother, teacher and guide. They spent their entire day watching them at close quarters studying in their computer lab, library and music room. The visit was a very enriching experience as they saw even with meager resources how these children helped each other - an example of selfless living. A cheque of Rs. 3,77,188/- was given by the Manager Mr. Rahul Aggarwal on the occasion of Independence Day to the SOS Villages of India.
Pramerica - Spirit of Community Awards 2013
The spirit of community award programme created by Prudential Inc. in the U.S. in 1995 are a school level recognition programme for the community service. Their objective is to encourage the efforts of school children currently engaged in voluntary community service and hold them as role models for all young Indians.

The students of our school were awarded with Gold and Bronze medals on March 31st at Epicenter, Gurgaon - the teacher incharge was Ms. Deepa Haruray.

With the aim of helping the under privileged children our school organized a Painting Competition on 10 December 2012 where the students gave shape to their ideas on topics such as ‘School Chale Hum’, ‘When I grow up I want to become a ..............‘. The sale proceeds of this competition were donated towards the ‘HT Foundation For Change’ which aims to educate the weaker sections of our society.

This prestigious awards programme instituted by DLF Pramerica Life Insurance Co. is an extension of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, the largest youth recognition programme in the US based exclusively on volunteer service.

This year, out of the 3000+ applications received from Indian schools, 15 individual and three group entries made it to the final round. Prominent Physicist Prof. Yashpal gave away the awards to the students for their meaningful contributions to community.

Shreya Goel & Ridhima Choudhary of St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janak Puri, New Delhi bagged BRONZE MEDAL for their contribution towards society.

SOS Villages of India’ is a NGO which is a non-profitable organization. It helps children, those who bravely faced various natural calamities like flood, earthquakes and terrorism. SOS Villages of India provide a complete home to these children.

Growth of nation is also based on taking care of our weaker sections. Thus the entire school contributed generously for the S.O.S. Society. A group of 50 students went to SOS village Bawana on 20th July 2012 and interacted with the children, visited the homes and also met their mother. The students carried with them some gifts for these children and gained a special insight of their lives.

Following this maxim the school and students contributed an amount of Rs. 2,77,790 towards SOS Children Villages Of India. The Director Mrs. Anjali Aggarwal presented the cheque to Mr. Kanchan Sen – HEAD DIRECT MARKETING IN FUND RAISING DEPARTMENT OF SOS CHILDREN VILLAGES OF INDIA on the eve of Independence Day function held on 12th August 2011.

The students visited the S.O.S village Bawana on 25th April and saw twenty two homes built by S.O.S society. Each home had ten children with the ‘Mother’- A care taker lady who looked after the needs of the children like her own. The mothers also told their story of struggle to bring up the children and finally making them settled down in life. The students enjoyed interacting with the children and also gave gifts to them. The experience was worth remembering , teaching the joy of sharing and giving.

A Cheque of Rs. 2,78,783/- was handed over by our Director Mrs Anjali Aggarwal to Mrs. Seema Jairath, State Coordinator, SOS Villages of India.
SOS 2008-2009
A contribution of Rs. 1,34,172 was given by SMS family to Mr. Harpreet Singh Deputy Head, Publicity and Fund Raising (SOS) by our honourable chairman Mr. T. P. Aggarwal.

The students interacted with village Students and learnt the way they lead their lives. They visited their respective homes, shared much information, played Cricket and sketched some drawings with them. Our students also gave some gifts to them which brought smiles on their faces. It was a wonderful experience to cherish.

GOONJ
“GOONJ” AN N.G.O., WORKING FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
“Uplifting ourselves by caring for others”

Goonj is a voluntary organization known as one of the first organizations worldwide to take up “Clothing as a development subject”.

In this regard the students of our school every year extend a helping hand in this noble cause by donating books, stuffed toys, shoes, clothes, stationary, etc.

The empathetic side of the young Markians was seen when they generously contributed large quantities of stuffed toys, shoes, stationery items, books, clothes, blankets, bedspreads etc. to the NGO – the ‘Goonj’ Society.
2010-2011
This year too the students donated 21 boxes which were handed over to the Goonj Society by the Manager of the school Mr. Rahul Aggarwal.
PRATIBIMB-2009
Our school participated in a 3 day interaction programme called “PRATIBIMB-2009” organized by GOONJ, an NGO and received the third prize amongst 18 schools in the “Seeking Solutions” event for presenting a mime on rural problems. The mime depicted how the unscientific beliefs of illiterate rural people in “quacks” & “ojhas” can ruin them.

The school received a trophy and a certificate for their presentation.
2008-2009
S.M.S Faculty contributed items such as stationary, woollens, soft toys in large bulk for the underprivileged children this year as well. It is a regular feature of the school which involves the students from all the classes right from class I to class XII making them realize their moral responsibility towards the underprivileged children and thus sensitizing values of consideration and humanity amongst young hearts.
HELP AGE INDIA
2007-2008
Mr. Manjeet Singh accepting the cheque form the chairman.IA the class which contrubuted the most.Under the aegis of Help Age India, the students of our school contributed Rs. 67,738/- in order to support the senior citizens of our country.

This year when Bihar was devastated by floods, the children of our school contributed 1050 Kgs. of rice and 50 Kgs. of pulses to help the people in their hour of crisis.

The students of SMS contributed an amount of Rs. 67,738 towards the “School Education Cum Fund Raising Programme” under the aegis of Helpage India given by our Chairman Mr. T. P. Aggarwal to Manjeet Singh, Sr. Manager of Helpage India.

Diwali Mela’s are organized by the NGO’s like Prerna NIketan and Muskan in our school on regular basis.

The students are encouraged to buy their products as the proceeds from them go for a noble cause.
