St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janakpuri organized an Odissi Dance Recital by Smt. Sharon Lowen under the ageis of SPIC MACAY on 27th November, 2017. The artist was accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The artist explained the students the origin of classical dance; i.e. how Brahma created Natya Veda by taking speech from Rig Veda, Abhinaya from yajur Veda, music from Samaveda and aesthetic experiences from Atharva Veda and revealed to Sage Bharata to save humanity from deterioration of moral values.

In her starting performance with Ganesh Stuti, she explained ‘Tribhangi’ where the body is held with three bends of head, torso and knees and ‘chauka’ a square like stance that symbolizes jagannath. Her instructive presentation was very inspiring, besides explaining finer nuances, she taught the students basic footwork.

The Odissi exponent enthralled the audience with her mesmerizing footwork, facial expressions and homogeneity in presentation of this vibrant dance form.

The school hosted Kathak Dance Recital by renowned artist Smt. Shovana Narayan under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 26th Oct. 2016 in the school premises. The artists were accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by school Principal Ms. Rama Sethi and the artist.

Shovana Narayan, a name synonymous with Kathak, is the celebrated outstanding doyen of this art form. Breathing the spirit and ethos of Indian spirituality, classicism and artistic excellence for her outstanding, consistent and trend-setting pioneering works in Kathak, she has been awarded the prestigious Padmashiri Award by the President of India in 1992 and the SangeetNatakAkademi award in 2001.

Smt. Shovana Narayan brought about manifestation of dance in many forms of nature. She interestingly compared it with real life situations and things. Bringing out an amazing novelty in various expressions of dance, she indeed won over hearts of the audience.

St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janakpuri hosted a Violin Recital by Maestro Anupriya Deotale under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 6 October 2015 in the school premises. Anupriya Deotale who has created an enviable niche for herself in the field of fusion music and the first Indian musician to receive the prestigious Ustad Salamat Ali and Nazakat Ali Khan award at Lahore (Pakistan) in 2004 worked with great musicians from France, Germany, Spain and represented India in over 40 countries.

She along with tabla artist Shri Soumitro Paul was accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The programme started with a sweet melodious ‘Rag Malkauns Alaap’ depicting morning which transcended deep down in the hearts of the audience. Her interaction with students was very interesting and educative as she satisfactorily replied to the queries of the students about Violin and sang “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram’ along with the time of the Violin. The performance kept the audience spellbound. The atmosphere came alive with jugalbandi of violin and tabla in which students also participated enthusiastically.

Truly an enriching experience for the students.

The III International Convention of SPIC MACAY was hosted by IITB Mumbai from 31st May to 6th June 2015. Around 200 participants from all over the country and abroad rededicated themselves to this voluntary movement of conserving various forms of Art. Our school had the privilege of representing the Delhi Chapter alongwith some other schools. Four students attended the Convention alongwith the teacher coordinator Ms. Sunita Hakhu. At this week long event over 300 artists from different parts of the country showcased their art forms.

The day started at 3:30 a.m. in the morning with a wake up call followed by the various forms of Yoga. Immediately afterwards intensive workshops of various arts where conducted by professional Gurus. This was followed by holistic lunch. From 1:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. various presentations where given by classical folk and craft artists. After a short break for holistic dinner again presentations were given to 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The artists mesmerized and left an everlasting effect on the audience with every master piece performance. The convention culminated with an over night series of concerts from 6 in the evening and ending early next morning which was followed by a Heritage Walk to places of historical value in the city of Mumbai on the last day. This type of conventions are congregations of people associated with a nobel cause and efforts of penetrate deep into the cultural ethos of our country and reach out to as many young people as possible. It was a unique experience for all the participants who had the privilege of interacting with the maestros at a different level free of any encumberances or limitations of time and space in a very serene and spiritual atmosphere.

The school hosted a Flute Recital by the renowned artist Pt. Rajendra Prasanna under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 21st April 2015 in the school premises. Pt. Rajendra Prasanna, a legend in the field of instrumental music is from Banaras Gharana and was disciple of Great masters like Hafeez Ahmed Khan and Sarfaraz Hussain Khan. Recepient of many awards and honours including UP Sangeet Natak Academy (1995) and Grammy Award Certificate.

Sh. Rajendra Prasanna along with other artists was accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp.

Sh. Rajendra Prasanna ji started the programme with a sweet melodeous ‘aalap’ which transcended deep down in the hearts of the audience. His interaction with the students was very interesting and they sang ‘Saare Jahan Se Achcha‘ along with the tune of the flute. The performance kept the audience spell bound and mesmerized. The atmosphere came alive with jugalbandi of flute and tabla in which the students also participated enthusiastically.

The artists were accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the school Principal Ms. Rama Sethi along with the artists.

Kathak exponent enthralled the audience with her mesmerizing foot work, facial expressions and homogeneity in presentation of this vibrant dance form.

Jugalbandi of artist with tabla left the audience spellbound. It was both an entertaining and instructive workshop.
Spic Macay Programme - (17 April 2014)
St. Mark's Sr. Sec. Public School, Janak Puri hosted "Sitar Recital Cum Lecture" under the aegis of "Spic Macay" on 17th Apirl. The show commenced with the traditional lighting of lamp. School Principal Ms. Rama Sethi, welcomed the Sitar Recital exponent, Sh. Shubhendra Rao and his team of accompanying artists.

The performance received much praise from the young audience who were thrilled and spell bound to get a taste of impeccable performance on the strings of Sitar.

A mesmerizing jugalbandi on Tabla kept the audience glued to their place. An informative and & interactive session between students & artists culminated the programme.

The school hosted KATHAKALI LECTURE CUM DEMONSTRATION by the renowned artist Sh. Kalamandalam Amaljit under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 7 October 2013.

The artist explained 24 basic mudras of Kathakali and their usage and used in daily life situations in dance form. Each movement, gesture and expression was thoroughly explained to the students.

Later the main dance recital transported the audience to an ethereal world of senses and left them spell bound. Vibrant and colourful costumes, energetic yet graceful dance moves and the familiar but interesting facial expressions made the recital all the more appealing. The dexterous hand movements and agile footwork along with the novelty of the traditional dance in sync with modern day thought of environment protection was mighty impressive. A stunning performance in elaborate costumes depicting a scene from Mahabharata by the artist without rendering of any vocals made it highly appreciable.

A very informative and interactive session with students.
First International Convention of Spic Macay - (20 to 26 May 2013)
Our School took part in the First International Convention of Spic Macay held in IIM, Kolkata from 20 May 2013 to 26 May 2013. More than 2500 delegates of schools and colleges from India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Indonesia and Portugal participated in it. Our students participated in Kshatriya dance and phad painting. It was a life time experience to watch live the great gurus like Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Teejan Bai, Pt. Rajan – Sajan Mishra, Ustad Rashid Khan etc. The group comprised of Aditi Sharma (X A), Khyati Gaur (X A), Surbhi Chopra (X A), Kunica Gupta (X C) and Harshita Sharma (X D) was headed by Ms. Swati Banerji.

The highly proficient dances explained the nuances of the dance, significance of mythological stories adapted in dance forms. She began the presentation with Shiv Stuti and went on to present an interesting and instructive dance on Meera Bai’s lyrics.

Under the aegis of SPIC MACAY, our school organized a Quawwali Presentation by Sh. Gulam Sabir & Sh. Gulam Waris on 3 December 2012 in the school premises. The artists were accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by school Principal Ms. Rama Sethi.

It was indeed a delightful presentation wherein the great quwallas explained the difference between real and original Quawwali and how it has changed gradually over the years, imbibing nuances of various religious and regions.

Rendering of Amir Khusro & the ever popular devotional song ‘Duma Dum Mast Kalandar’ left the audience spellbound. Vote of thanks for the presentation was proposed by the school Principal Ms. Rama Sethi.

The school hosted Bharatnatyam Dance Recital by renowned artist Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 5 December 2012 in the school premises.

The artist was accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by school Vice Principal Ms. Alka Kher.

Bharatnatyam exponent enthralled the audience with perfection in Presentations of this vibrant dance form. She explained different mudras in detail and answered the queries of the students. Vote of thanks for the presentation was proposed by the school Vice Principal Ms. Alka Kher.

Under the aegis of SPIC MACAY, a workshop of Bharatnatyam was conducted by Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan from 15th to 18th November 2011. Twenty three students comprised the group which underwent intensive training for four days. Apart from training students in the basics of the dance form, nuances and finer points were taught. Students benefitted immensely from the workshop and a fine dance recital was performed as the grand finale.

In reciprocation to the dedication shown by the students Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan, the legendary Classic Guru presented books on “Bharatnatyam”, and “Classical Dances of India” to the school.

Under the aegis of SPIC MACAY our school organiazed a wonderful Dance Recital in Mohiniattam by Smt. Bharati Shivaji on 14th November 2011.

Smt. Bharati Shivaji presented a dance recital along with explanation of all the nine ‘Rasas’ with ‘Abhinay’ and commentary.

Her graceful and languor movements, which are the essentials of Mohiniattam, enhanced the beauty of the dance. Later a ‘Jugalbandi’ of ‘Mridangam’ and Edakka translated the audience to an altogether different world.

The artists were accorded a traditional welcome and the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by school Manager Mr. L. K. Rai and Principal Mrs. Rama Sethi.

A renowned and distinguished and highly decorative performer, Ms. Kiran Segal held the audience in spellbound. She not only explained the nuances and complexities of the dance but amply demonstrated with mesmerizing performances.

Spic Macay - Virasat 2010Our school conducted an intensive workshop on 'Kathakali' from 25th November 2010 to 1st December 2010 by Sh. Evoor Ranjendran Pillai. Our students were enlightened with the knowledge of 'Kathakali' basic mudras with slokas, navras sloka with abhinaya and the movements. It was really a learning experience for the students.

Under the aegis of SPIC MACAY students of St. Mark’s Sr. Sec.Public School, Janak Puri went for a ‘Heritage Walk’ to Qutub Minar, the worlds “Tallest Brick Minaret” on 30th October 2010. Renowned historian Dr. Ramji Narayan who accompanied the group was kind enough to spare his valuable time to reminisce the history of the amalgamation of Hindu – Muslim culture.

A Manipuri Dance Recital by renowned artists Guru Raj Kumar Singhajit Singh and Smt. Charu Sija was hosted by St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janak Puri under the aegis of SPIC MACAY on 20th October 2010 in the school premises.

The audience transcended to ‘Duapara Yug’ where Lord Krishna played Holi with Radha. And in the next sequence Arjun met Chitrangada, the daughter of King of Manipur through their mesmerizing & unique choreography. The Manipuri drummers created magic with a concoction of moves and relentless energy for which the audience rapturously applauded.

It was an unforgettable life experience for the students as they were enthralled by the cultural heritage of classical dances of India.
25th SPIC MACAY National Convention - (1 to 6 June 2010)
Students of St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janakpuri attended SPIC MACAY Silver Jubilee National Convention held at IIT, Kanpur. This was a unique cultural experience for the students as they got the opportunity to see the live performances on stage by some of the world renowned classical music and classical dance artists during the six day convention from 1st to 6th June 2010.

Besides the daily yoga session, a variety of workshops in Indian crafts like embroidery, wood carving, pottery, Madhubani, patua painting, paper Machie, bamboo weaving, handloom cloth weaving etc., intensives in music both folk and classical, and also in Indian dances were offered to the participants.

The Classical Overnight on the last day by renowned artists – Ustd. Abdul Rashid Khan (Vocalist), Ustd. Shahid Parvez Khan (Sitarist) Pt.Vishwamohan Bhatt – (MohanVeena Player) & Padma Bhushan T. N. Krishnan (Carnatic Violin) was truly an amazing experience for everyone.

The jugalbandi with accompanied artist on Tabla was a new exposure for one and all. The enthralled audience along with the representative of SPIC MACAY and Critics from Media exploded with applause on presentation of Kathak dance recital by the exponent. It was an unforgettable life experience for the students as they were exposed to the cultural heritage of classical dances of India.

Under the signs of ‘Spic Macay’ our school hosted a Kuchipudi Dance Recital by the renowned artists Sh. Jayarama Rao & Smt. Vanashree Ra under the aegis of 'SPIC MACAY' on 21st of November 2009 in the school premises.

Kuchipudi exponents enthralled the audience with perfection in synchronization and homogeneity in presentations of this vibrant dance form. They explained different mdras in detail and answered the queries of the students. Vote of thanks was proposed by the School Principal, Ms. Rama Sethi.

The School organized an intensive workshop on ‘Kathakali’ by renowned artist Shri. Evoor Rajendran Pillai under the aegis of ‘SPIC MACAY’ from 30 November to 4 December 2009.

Students got to know about ‘Kathakali’, its origin, 24 basic mudras, basic steps and facial expressions etc. Students underwent special practice sessions to learn to control their eye movement to express and emote the Navras i.e. Srinagar, Hasya, Bhayanak, Karuna, Roudra, Veer, Beebhats, Adbhut and Shant.

It was really a learning experience for the students.
