There is no loyal friend than a book. A great book leaves you with great experience and you live several lives with it. In an endeavour to hone the creative skills in writing, the school organised Book Week for its literature lovers. Sundry activities were held for Classes VI to XI. Keeping in tune with the times, the students of Class XI wrote travel blogs unravelling their novel experiences they have had during their vacation. Class IX indulged themselves in a gastronomical journey by writing blogs on food. Class VII and VIII explored the world of books in a unique way by writing Fractured Fairy Tales and Purquoi Tales respectively. In this world of media and networking, the students of Class VI followed the culture of the news channel by giving breaking news in a spicy manner. This activity was named Masala News as the students exaggerated a petty thing into a charade just as the news anchors. All in all, it was a great event. |

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers"
- Charles William Elliot.
These beautiful lines clearly depict the value of books in enlightening individual knowledge and in bringing our saturated life to a turning point. Keeping this in mind, an enthralling Book Week was organized by our school for classes I-X from 6 to 9 September 2015. The event provided all the students a wonderful podium to not only speak out their minds and portray their hidden talents but also aided in their overall personality development and enhancement of self confidence. “There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favourite book-Marcel Proust”. In today’s world, we have so many books but unfortunately we have so little time. Books aren’t made of pages and words, they are made of hopes, dreams and possibilities. To let our children have a feel of this fanciful world of books, St. Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School organized a Book Week for its pre-primary, primary and senior classes from 4 August to 8 August 2014 with the aim of inculcating the habit of reading in children.
All the classes had different activities for their students. The children of seedling gave a special visit to the school library where the teachers presented a live story narration for them. They enjoyed as it was their first encounter with the characters of various books. A Rhyme Dramatization Competition was organized for the students of class sapling and they presented many amazing rhymes with full enthusiasm.
The grandparents are the back bone of any family and their stories are the most memorable ones. Keeping this tradition alive, one grandparent from each section of Class I was invited to narrate a story for the kids. Later on, the students used their imagination to make beautiful drawings based on the story. The girls of class II were highly energetic as they made scrap files about themselves. They wrote each and everything about their interests, liking and disliking, hobbies and various other aspects about their personality. Later on, people from the Scholastic visited their classes for the story narration session. It was a wonderful experience for them. Class III was not left behind as the students brought a prop and they spoke a few sentences about their favourite story character.
Class IV girls were in high spirits as they had the Library Mascot Making Activity which they performed very well. They gave special names to their mascots. Class V students penned down a story on their own and their imagination had no limits. The budding writers also drafted the book covers for their stories giving full swing to an artist in themselves.
The students of Class VI dressed up to enact their favourite characters. They were seen enacting as Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Swami from RK Narayan’s Malgudi Days, Portio from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Sherlock Holmes and many others.
The students of Class VII participated in a remarkable interactive activity “Sell a Book”. The students divided in groups had to prepare the book cover, slogans and pamphlets for the book they wanted to advertise and sell to VIII standard girls.
The students of Class VIII were shown a power-point presentation on the writers who have penned mystery novels with detectives as lead. Later they were asked to complete a detective story. The students of Classes IX-X learnt to make a cartoon strip. Also, Class IX girls had situational extempore. The students of Class X were shown power-point presentation on Ruskin Bond and then they were tested for their awareness about the author. The students of Class XI did Blog Writing.
By the end of an exciting week packed with activity, the students learnt that reading books not only empowers each of us but also tickles our thinking. “Books….are like lobster shells, we surround ourselves with them, then we grow out of them and leave them behind as evidence of our earlier stages of development.” |

Books are proclaimed as the best companions one can ever have. Our school celebrated the spirit of joyous learning and reading by organizing a Book Week from December 23 to December 27, 2013. The main idea behind this was to develop a literary bent of mind in every child by engaging them in some fun activities. A pot-pourri of activities like Mask Making, Twist in a Fairy Tale, My Super Girl, Calligram Writing, Rebus Puzzle, Twitter Review, Haiku etc. were held for classes I to XI. This was a deviation from the typical concept as it enabled every child to dabble with their imagination rather than compelling them to learn. Our little Shakespeares, Miltons and Keats set out to make a mark for themselves. The Book Week was a successful attempt to bring out the latent talent in every child. |
