The theme of World No Tobacco Day in 2024 centre’s on “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference.” This theme of WNTD 2024 is focused on advocating for an end to the targeting of youth with harmful tobacco products.

World No Tobacco Day on May 31 is a chance to work for a future without smoking. This important health day from the World Health Organization shows how dangerous tobacco is. Tobacco kills over 6 million people each year. Statistically, the global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 70 lakh people each year, out of which 13 lakh people die in India alone.

This special day gives hope that together we can help people stop smoking. It inspires us to take action for better health. By uniting on World No Tobacco Day, we can make progress toward a smoke-free world.

In order to spread awareness about the lethal effects of using tobacco in any form. our students of class IX & X contributed by making colourful and informative posters and pledged their support in future endeavours in the fight against tobacco and substance abuse especially by the teen population. The initiative sensitised the adolescent minds to keep themselves wary from such substances.

We recently organized a Deworming Drive, providing deworming tablets to students after securing due parental approval. The event was carefully structured to cater to different age groups. Pre-Primary students received their deworming tablets under the direct supervision of their parents, who then responsibly escorted them back home, ensuring their safety and comfort. Senior students, meanwhile, were administered the tablets in their classrooms after lunch. This health initiative is part of the school's commitment to safeguarding student wellness by preventing and treating parasitic infections, thereby promoting better health outcomes and supporting optimal academic performance.

The World Pulses Day is celebrated annually on February 10th to recognize the importance of pulses for food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. Pulses, also known as legumes, refer to the edible seeds of leguminous plants grown for food. Commonly consumed types of pulses include dried beans, lentils, and peas.

To acknowledge the vital role of pulses and to deepen the understanding of different types of pulses, their nutritional benefits, and promote healthy eating habits, the students of Class V got the opportunity to organise a pulses party which was a delightful and educational experience for them. It also helped them to explore personal preferences and alternatives for incorporating more pulses into their meals.

“For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, debate.” - Margaret Heffernan.

Debate is an excellent activity for language learning because it engages students in a variety of cognitive and linguistic ways. Engaging in debates fosters open-mindedness, the ability to consider multiple perspectives, and honed skills in public speaking and rhetoric.

To enhance the linguistic skills of the students, Class 7 students presented their views on ‘The World Would Be a Better Place, if More Women Were Incharges.’ This activity helped in enhancing the communication skills and fostering the minds of these young students.

With an aim to make every child in the country worm-free, the Directorate of Family Welfare, GNCT of Delhi has organised a National Deworming Campaign October, 2023. This campaign is an important public health effort to improve the well being of children and promote their overall development.

St. Mark's World School exuberantly participated in this initiative of the government of Delhi. The students of Classes Seedling to XII consumed a single dose of Albendazole tablets in the school with their parents' consent.

Deworming Day in India holds significant importance as it helps combat the prevalence of parasitic worm infections among children, which can lead to various health issues such as anaemia, malnutrition, and impaired cognitive development. These campaigns play a crucial role in improving public health, as by conducting regular deworming campaigns, the Indian government aims to improve the overall health and well-being of children, enabling them to lead healthier lives and pursue education without health-related impediments.

“Drugs never helped anybody sing better or play music better or do anything better. All drugs can do is kill you – and kill you the long, slow, hard way.” - Anonymous.

Drugs, the notorious five letter word, has the capacity to inflict unimaginable harm on individuals, especially the youth. As a deadly vice, a growing menace, drugs have an unfathomable power to destroy an individual’s life, capacity and capability, and deprive families, societies and cultures of their value and essence. Consumption of drugs can lead to adverse social, physical, mental, emotional and psychological consequences. Since teenagers are most susceptible and vulnerable to drugs and substance abuse, it is paramount to sensitize them about possible ills and evils associated with drugs’ use and abuse.

To this end, a pledge ‘SAY NO TO DRUGS’ was taken by the students of Classes IX-XII during the morning assembly. The assembly lawn reverberated with the affirmation and firm resolve by the students that they will never consume drugs and will become responsible members of society.

78 years and one can still get goose bumps thinking about the incident.

On 9th August 1945, during World War II, the United States of America detonated the atomic bomb on the Japanese City of Nagasaki killing around 80,000 people instantly and later due to injuries caused by the bomb.

In order to make them aware, the students of Class 7 were shown a video on the Nagasaki Day.

The video highlighted the aftermath that the Nagasaki City faced. They were aghast to know how a country can be so brutal towards another.

As a tribute, the students created origami Swans in order to promote world peace as the swan is a symbol of harmony, peace and patience.

Students also created a comparative pictorial study showing the before - the beautiful Nagasaki City and the after - the face of the city after the attack.

This activity was an eye opener for students as it not only made them aware of the attacks that took place in Japan but also instilled in them a wave of promotion of world peace.

We believe participation in the simulation is its own reward. One such platform of simulation is Model United Nations, MUN as it advances understanding of the UN and contemporary international issues, and it has changed the lives of many delegates. Model United Nations aims to facilitate cooperation between countries in International Law, International Security, Economic Development, Social Progress and Human Rights issues. To acquaint the students with the same, SMWSMUN’23 was organised wherein the students from Classes IX to XII played the roles of delegates representing a specific country or a committee namely AIPPM, UNHRC, UNGA etc. Some students of Classes XI and XII performed the role of the members of Executive Board (EB) to familiarise the delegates with the role and functioning of MUN. With a goal to pass resolutions that would resolve the issues being debated, all the delegates of SMWSMUN’23 participated in it with a lot of enthusiasm and vigour. Participation in it also promoted students’ interest in international relations and related subjects, increased their capacity to engage in problem solving, taught aspects of conflict resolution, research skills and communication skills. To encourage more such participation and as a token of motivation, our honourable Vice Principal Dr. Sabina Shergill felicitated the delegates with certificates and books. They were thrilled and thoroughly enjoyed the session as it was an exceptional learning experience for them.

MUN trains today’s individuals to become tomorrow’s leaders”.

Model United Nations, helps the student to understand the operations and working of the United Nations and develop a set of soft skills and expertise in different fields. MUN helps the students to achieve the spirit of the four Cs i.e., Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Collaboration.

On 7 July, students of Classes 11 and 12 hosted a comprehensive and detailed MUN session for the pupils of Classes 9 and 10.

In this interactive discussion, the 9th and 10th graders were given in-depth information on the functioning and conduct of MUNs, and how this brainstorming activity will improve their academic and extracurricular competence. This included detailed descriptions of the procedures of a formal MUN debate and the facets of a committee caucus were emphasised.

The students of 12th and 11th grade took up this task with a vision to apprise and lay the groundwork for the freshmen and sophomores to hone their skills in the forthcoming inter and intra school MUNs.

According to research, 90% of all road accidents are related to human error. It is not only the man behind the wheel but every occupant of a car, every rider seated on a two wheeler, every pedestrian who is crucial for the safety of all who 'go for a drive' on the roads, streets and bylanes of life. To do their bit in making our roads safer for all, students of Class 10 researched upon and then wrote down essays highlighting the importance of the Four Risk Factors - Speeding, Wearing Helmets Properly, Not to Drink and Drive and Wearing Seat Belts even for passengers sitting in the rear seat. The students of Class 10 also created posters to increase awareness about the bus lane initiative and wrote slogans promoting walking, cycling and the use of public transport.

Children should have pens in their hands, not tools.

Childhood is the most cheerful time in a person’s life. As rightly said above, children should spend this time of their life with ease. They should play, study, eat good food and lead a comfortable life without worries. Unfortunately, not all children get to enjoy their childhood the way they should. Poverty, family problems and many such issues force children to struggle with the responsibility of working for wages. They become victims of child labour.

In order to spread awareness about the necessity to stop child labour, World Day against Child Labour is celebrated on 12 June every year. To commemorate the same, students of classes 6, 7 and 8 indulged themselves in a variety of activities. Students of Class 6 enacted a role play to spread the message of importance of education for children rather than working for long hours in unpleasant conditions. Students of Class 7 watched an animated video depicting child labour and its ill effects. Lastly, students of Class 8 made attractive posters depicting the dire need to stop child labour. Safety is a small investment for a rich future.

Nowadays, travelling has become the essence of life whether it be for studies, work, or any other important purpose. But we need to make sure that we, as well as others, are safe while travelling. For this, we need to make sure that we are following all road safety rules and precautions so that accidents can be avoided and others are not harmed because of our negligent attitude.

To spread awareness, the United Nations has declared 2021-2030 as the second Decade of Action for Road Safety and WHO, in collaboration with partners, has organized the 7th edition of UN Global Road Safety Week which was held from 15 May 2023 till 21 May 2023.

To celebrate the same, students of Classes 6 and 7 clicked pictures wearing a helmet or a seatbelt to showcase thatseat belts are the best defence against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep one safe and secure inside their vehicle. Also, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a serious brain injury and death because during a fall or collision, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the helmet, rather than the head and brain.

On 31 May 2023, WHO and public health champions around the world will come together to celebrate World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). This year’s theme is “WE NEED FOOD, NOT TOBACCO”.

The 2023 global campaign aims to raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable, nutritious crops. It will also aim to expose the tobacco industry’s efforts to interfere with attempts to substitute tobacco growing with sustainable crops, thereby contributing to the global food crisis.

To raise awareness on this international concern and save our mother earth from the harmful effects of growing and using tobacco, the students at ST. MARK’S WORLD SCHOOL expressed their concern by making creative FACE MASKS and spreading important information about the harmful effects of using tobacco for a person and his surroundings.

One of the many dark days in Indian history was the incident of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre which took place on 13 April, 1919. One of the major reasons behind this incident was the Rowlatt Act which was protested by the Indians. Thousands of Indians had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh to celebrate Baisakhi when Brigadierc-Generalc Reginald Dyer ordered incessant firing on them without any warning. Many innocent people lost their lives in this heinous incident which still remains fresh in our minds.

To commemorate this incident, students of Class 8 enacted a role play to showcase the major events that took place on that day. The objective was to make the students aware of the great historic past of India and sacrifices of the people in pre-independence era. It also inculcated the feeling of nationalism & patriotism amongst the students andmade them aware about the importance of liberty, sovereignty, unity and fraternity.

We can't control the sea, but we can learn how to surf the waves.

We can’t always change what’s happening around us, but we can change what happens within us and mediation is a vital way to purify and quiet the mind, thus rejuvenating the body. As a prelude to the celebration of Mahashivratri, an effort was undertaken at SMWS to help students understand the nuances of meditation and spirituality so that they can develop a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. The students of Class IX attended a meditation session under the guidance of our Vice Principal, Shergill Ma'am, who taught them to concentrate on their inner being and bring stillness within. The enlightening session taught the students to beat stress; and also be patient, gentle and kind with themselves and their surroundings.
