Vegetation and green cover are crucial to our eco-system and critical natural resources, seeing as how they produce oxygen, which is essential for the existence and survival of nearly every species on this planet. So, by causing or playing a role in deforestation, we are not only endangering our lives, we are also putting the entire planet at risk.
We know how important trees are to our existence and for the well-being of the planet at large, which is why we at St. Mark's Girls Sr. Sec. School continuing our legacy of plantation drive on the occasion of Van Mahotsav on 7 July 2021 started a 2 day plantation drive in which we asked our students to plant a green friend in their vicinity so that in these distant times we can remain abreast with nature and make future generations always responsible towards the environment. Here's a green glance into our very own online plantation drive. |

"Let’s nurture the nature so that we can have a better future.”
Now more than ever, our planet needs us to step up and take action and reverse the degradation and damage. Keeping this aim in view, the students of Class 4 and 5 showcased their creative streak by making Digital Collages, on the Theme - Ways to save our Planet Earth and showed thier commitment towards the cause, with the hope that things will get better. |
World Environment Day - (5 June 2021) |
|
This World Environment Day 2021 was both a celebration of our planet and a rallying call for action because June 5 also marks the official launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, an ambitious 10-year global push to repair the damage we have done to the fragile natural systems that sustain us.This environment day kicked off with leaders in politics, science, communities, religion and culture, raising their voices to call for the protection and revival of millions of hectares of ecosystems around the world for the benefit of people and nature.
“The task is monumental. We need to replant and protect our forests. We need to clean up our rivers and seas. And we need to green our cities,” said UN Secretary - General António Guterres. “Accomplishing these things will not only safeguard the planet’s resources. It will create millions of new jobs by 2030, generate returns of over $7 trillion dollars every year and help eliminate poverty and hunger."
Yet why are we hesitant in taking care of our planet when it is we who are going to benefit from it? This daunting question needs to be taken upon as fast as possible or it is we who are going to lose the race.
We at SMGS, KESHOLOY realise that Earth is the only planet we have and there is no planet B. And with our various efforts to sustain this vulnerable planet we continually have been taking steps to deliver our goal towards Earth's longevity by understanding it's needs.
To give our efforts a true meaning KESHOLOY organized several Activities on the occasion of World Environment Day for our students to make them understand their responsibilities towards Mother Earth.
Day long activities were held for different classes keeping in mind how they can contribute in spreading awareness about this noble cause. Classes I-III gave their best by colouring the canvas with bright hues as the students enthusiastically participated in a painting competition, on the theme, 'My planet, My Earth' whereas students of Classes IV and V were given the task of making digital collages on the theme, 'Ways to Save Our Planet Earth'.
As technology has become the need of the hour these students proved that they were quite comfortable with the digital medium as they left us impressed by their digital creativity and innovative ideas to save our planet from any further deterioration.
As the fun filled activities for Juniors wrapped up with declaration of the winners on school's social media pages now was the turn of the students of the senior wing. Students of Classes VI- XII need to realize the relevance of observance of such days and what can be a better way to learn more about the environment than a Quiz . So two different quizzes one for Classes VI - VIII and the other for Classes IX -XII were prepared on the theme, Ecosystem Restoration' and shared with students. The responses of students were recorded, analysed and results were declared of the top three positions of each class which were again declared through the school's official social media pages.
The fun filled activities gave us an opportunity to make learning fun.
The earth is what we all have in common. World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June. It is a day that reminds everyone on the planet to get involved in environment-friendly activities. The students of Classes I to III actively participated in a Painting Competition. The activity aimed at spreading awareness about the significance of nature and the conservation of our natural resources. The need of the hour is to pay heed to our surroundings and make our mother earth a better place to live.Students depicted varied aspects related to the environment in their paintings.
Every participant had a different and unique representation, and their paintings were commendable.
A very serious concern which affects each and every being of this Earth was dispersed among the students who either by painting or computing or by quizzing came closer to nature and had a thought to spare about it.
Hoping that with every passing year occasions like World Environment Day will leave us more responsible and compassionate towards the yearning Earth and to understand that our existence is dependent on the existence of Earth , it's biodiversity and it's ecosystems. |

HUMAN BEINGS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ECOSYSTEM IMBALANCE, BUT WE CAN STILL BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION.
The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed each year on 22 May, a date in our calendars dedicated to raising global awareness about the importance of protecting biological resources and the global biodiversity that shapes our environment - not only the various species of plants, animals and micro-organisms around us, but also the genetic diversity of each of them, as well as the great variety of ecosystems that make up our planet. |

Diwali marks the triumphant return of the supreme Lord Sri Ram and the mother Sita to Ayodhya, amidst lighting of lamps by the residents of Ayodhya. Diwali reminds us to illuminate our intellects with the light of the knowledge of god and dispel the darkness of material conditioning. It is celebrated all over India on the 15th day of the month of Kartik.
But with time Diwali has been responsible in creating noise and air pollution. The primary cause of this pollution is the use of fire crackers. There is emission of great amount of smoke with toxic elements. It also has an adverse affect on environment. The judiciary and the government have taken a serious note to this rising pollution and issued certain guidelines to be followed during the festival. The department of education of the Government of Delhi and NCT has also taken initiative in making the students aware of the hazards caused due to such fire works.
KESHOLOY, the Eco Club of St. Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School has taken initiative in reaching out to the students and sensitizing them with the problems associated with firecrackers. A video was made by the senior students of Classes 10 to 12, highlighting on the negative aspects of bursting crackers discussing important guidelines issued by the concerned authorities. Flying of kites is a common feature in India. Kite flying becomes lethal and hazardous because of the metal coated string used in flying kites. Often accidents involving kite flying have been reported causing fatal injuries especially during festivals. Keeping this in mind Eco Club and Animal Welfare Club of St. Mark's Girls Senior Secondary School in a joint venture as per the instructions given by Directorate of Environment, NCT of Delhi, discouraged students from flying kites and sensitised them about the harm it causes to both birds and humans. Students of Classes 5 to 12 were shown a video which not only sensitized students on this topic but also helped in spreading awareness about banning the Chinese manjha as it is a plastic synthetic string which is very harmful to birds, people flying kites as it can interrupt electricity supply after touching high tension lines and overhead metro electric lines resulting in accidents, injuries and loss of life. |

Waste Management has for quite some time been understood as a key area in global environmental protection. Beyond that integrated waste management may be
regarded as an interface between the production, distribution and consumption of goods on the one hand, and soil, ground water, air and climate on the other. Thus, it is an important partner in the context of sustainable development. An awareness is created among the students regarding the segregation of waste into bio and non-biodegradable waste which further aids the students to understand waste disposal in an appropriate and conditioned manner. Students are also involved in cleanliness drives emphasizing on exposing the society to the reality of the importance of a clean and green country. When students are conditioned for waste disposal they are also engaged in discovering techniques by which the biodegradable waste goes for composting. The compost so formed is productively used as a healthy manure in the school garden. Last but not the least recycling the waste is a very important part of waste disposal and it requires methods that can help us produce resources that can be reused and not wasted. Therefore students of our school are adequately versed with the ways of disposal, reuse, and segregation of waste. |

The students were shown a video on cleanliness drive and explained through visual effect how they can contribute in making the mission of clean Delhi come true. The students of classes I-V spent 10-15 minutes cleaning their classroom along with their class teachers . The drive was a success as it inculcated the habit of cleanliness in these young children as it instilled that cleanliness has to be spread around us by oneself. |
