It's Diwali time again and celebrations are in the air. There is an exhuberant energy brewing in the atmosphere. People are once again ready with their smiles to spread cheer and joy but with all the fun and fervour like every other occurrence this year, Diwali has also come with it's precationary measures. As the past few years we have been welcoming the festival of Diwali with an advisory but this year is different from the others as we all as citizens of this world are reeling under the vicious cycle of the Covid 19 pandemic. The situation is bad for Delhiites.... Sadly with an AQI of 'severely poor' we also have to prepare to face the challenge to come out of the third surge of the pandemic.

But as has been rightly said, 'When the goings get tough, the tough gets going' we at our school with the efforts of KESHOLOY our Eco Club took the onus to sensitize our students from Classes VI-XII by sharing the guidelines on celebrating an Eco Friendly Diwali.

Teachers shared a poster with the students desined by the Eco Club Incharge, Ms. Hardeep. Through the poster during the online classes teachers interacted with students and shared their views on the subject. Students were also explained the guidelines given by the National Green Tribunal on bursting of crackers during Diwali.

Students realised the importance of celebrating Diwali without bursting any types of fire crackers. They promised to give up on the momentary pleasure received by bursting crackers as it lead to long series of miseries.

We at our school realize our duty and take it as our moral responsibility to keep our environment pollution free this Diwali so that the festival of lights is all about
lights, rangolis and sweets without the smoke and noise of firecrackers.

THIS DIWALI LET'S BURST OUR EGOS AND NOT FIRECRACKERS!!!! HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ECO FRIENDLY DIWALI !!!!!

RUPAM DEHI JAYAM DEHI YASHO DEHI DVISHO JAHI

This mantra tells us to get rid of our false ego and to get rid of negative and mindless people around us who create hurdles and problems in our life.

'Rupam dehi' doesn't refer to a prayer for NAME or FORM or BEAUTY, but it is an entreaty to gain 'PRABHAVALAYA’. Without gaining a great PRABHA OR AURA, victory, fame or spiritual growth is not possible.

'Jayam dehi' is a prayer for victory while 'Yasho dehi' is an entreaty to gain fame.

'Dvisha' refers to hatred, enmity and hostility. 'Dvisho Jahi' thus means to turn away from enemies and hatred. Once we put down our internal enemies of hatred, enmity and jealousy, our spiritual path opens. This mantra is sung to welcome the Mother Durga and to seek her blessings.

We at St. Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School, with full spirit and reverence, welcome the epitomy of shakti - Goddess Durga. To mark the occasion of Durga Puja, a pujo - prayer service was performed by Oindrilla Chatterjee of Class 9 and a dance by Sanchari Nayek of Class 7 to fáilte the goddess.

On this auspicious occasion, the SMGS family wishes everyone a Happy Durga Pujo.

On October 10, 2020, St. Marks Girls Sr. Sec. School organised Psychoxia 2020, an intra-school psychology fest on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. The aim of the event was to make students recognize the importance of mental health and create awareness regarding the same. The first ever psychology fest offered participants an intimate space to put forward their ideas and opinions and engage in meaningful analysis.

The event hosted four activities, namely the spin a story, cryptic hunt, devil’s advocate and cognizance quiz. In spin a story, the participants were given a theme on the spot and were asked to come up with a story in a limited time span. Through this activity, the students were able to get a practical and analytical approach to the given themes of psychology with a touch of other genres. Cryptic hunt was an online treasure hunt wherein children were given cues and hints at every stage to proceed. The students show cased their ability to read between the lines and came up with quick responses. The Devil's Advocate on the other hand was the debate competition with a tinch of psychology into it. The students in this activity were asked to debate against themselves. The participants showed utmost spontaneity and deep understanding of psychological concepts. Cognizance quiz was a four round quiz that meant to evaluate the participant’s general understanding of mental health and related concepts. The participants impressed us with their quick thinking and prompt answers. They wonderfully showcased their analytical abilities and understanding of psychological concepts.

The event ended on a high note with the hope of keeping the mental health flags high followed by the announcement of winners. The vice principal then addressed the participants and organisers congratulating them on successful completion of the event.

The United Nations is our one great hope for a peaceful and free world. Ralph Bunche

United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24, commemorating the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. United Nations Day is the perfect opportunity to highlight the important achievements for a better world that the UN has won for all humanity and to support the people's movements to make it more democratic and effective.

Since its inception, the UN as an organisation has come a long way. Celebrating the UN day is a way of acknowledging this organisation’s tireless work. This year marks the 75 anniversary of the United Nations. St. Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School planned plethora of activities for the students of Classes 5 to 12 to sensitize them with the importance of UN.

Class 5 made headgears, badges, etc using UN symbols and flags of UN member countries. The little minds worked diligently and presented their work.

Class 6 students made UN stamps, as UN stamps are messengers of peace, human rights.

Class 7 made posters and wrote slogans using the 17 goals of Sustainable development provided by the UN.

A hypothetical situation of a World Government was created for the students of Class 8 students. They had to form an International party, coin its name and symbol and also list the points as a manifesto for their government.

Class 9 to 12 came up with idea of presenting UN updates everyday from 21 October to 24 October. An interesting teaser floated to keep everyone glued to the updates. It stressed on the relevance of the UN in today’s world. Such kinds of activities involving students make them realize the need of UN and the impact it has in their life. Further, they start thinking like a global citizen.

Festivals give us reasons to be happy and to enjoy life.”

Dussehra also known as Vijayadashmi is a major Indian festival celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvin month according to the Hindu calendar. The day culminates a nine day fasting period of Navratri in the Hindu culture. It coincides with the immersion of the idols of Goddess Durga. The day is celebrated to commemorate the killing of Ravana by Lord Rama. It also celebrates the killing of demon Mahishasur by Goddess Durga. To reinforce the message that good always triumphs over evil, the festival was celebrated virtually by the students of Classes Seedling to IV with a lot of religious zeal and fervour. The students performed vibrant Dandiya Dance, created beautiful wall hangings using paper craft, presented remarkable performances depicting scenes from the Ramayana and prepared scrumptious desserts to mark the special occasion. Education system proposed by Mahatma Gandhi is called as "Basic Education". He wanted the education to be activity centered to make the children skilled and independent and the medium of education to develop their mind, body and soul in a harmonious way and also meet the needs of their future life.

World Ozone Day - (16 September 2020)
The United Nations General Assembly on 23rd January, 1995 adopted resolution which proclaims 16th September as the World Ozone Day. The World Ozone Day offers an opportunity to focus global attention and action on this vital environmental issue.

The theme for the celebration of this year's World Ozone Day to be marked on 16th September is "Ozone for life: 35 years of ozone layer protection" and celebrate 35 years of the Vienna Convention and 35 years of global ozone layer protection. The slogan of the day, 'Ozone for life', reminds us that not only is ozone crucial for life on Earth, but that we must continue to protect the ozone layer for future generations. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer has so far been successful in phasing out 99% of Ozone Deleting Substances (ODSs) globally. As a result, the abundance of ODSs in the atmosphere is declining and a recent study has indicated that the ozone layer is recovering. Due to the significant reduction of ODSs globally and the starting of recovery of the Ozone Layer, the Montreal Protocol has been recognized as the most successful environment treaty, globally. The Protocol has been universally ratified by all 97 member countries of United Nations.

India is a Party to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and all its amendments. India has been successfully implementing the phase-out programme for Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs) in the country.

To celebrate this small victory for our Earth and for our environment we the Eco Club of SMGS Kesholoy proudly presents the stupendous efforts of our Green Warrior- Palak Gaur a student of XI-D who feels to address this issue with great zeal and pledges to bring the SMGS family to realise the importance of OZONE and how relevant it is, to protect it. Palak has relentlessly worked hard to put forth this video to make us aware about our Earth and how to prevent it's atmosphere from depletion. Let's watch and make a promise to ourselves that we will protect the ozone layer in our every little endeavour ..... OZONE FOR LIFE!!!!!

Ozone layer around the Earth acts as a shield protecting humans, plants and aquatic life. It is the presence of this layer that has made life possible on earth .... to spread awareness about this integral part of our atmosphere the Eco Club of our school KESHOLOY took the initiative to divulge the secrets about this powerful aspect of our environment to the students of Class 5 on 16 September 2020 which is being observed as the World Ozone Day, globally.

The awareness drive about the Ozone was carried out by our dynamic volunteer Lakshita Chhabra of Class XII.

Being a guiding light for the younger generation, Laksita took upon her able shoulders the responsibility to talk to them about the depleting ozone layer and it's harmful effects through a power point presentation prepared by her.

Lakshita presented her short PPT during the online classes scheduled for Class 5. Students interacted with her and understood the relevance and importance of the Ozone Layer in their lives and also learnt the ways to protect it.

The initiative proved to be mutually enriching as the young ones of Class 5 got inspired by their Senior and tried to imbibe the knowledge shared by her and for Lakshita it was one of a kind experience as she switched roles from being a student to an educator.

"Family is not an important thing, its everything"-Michael J. Fox.

Who can understand it more, than a child? Today, in this tough time of Pandemic, when schools are closed and we are in a lockdown, our children are happy and unaffected. It's nothing but the magic of the family. Watch Nitya Soni of Class IV-B, one of many happy ones, sharing her super excitement about her family.
"While you may not have had asked for them, and you definitely do not have an exchange policy for them, but of the millions of human beings out there, they are the ones who know you best. Family is perhaps, the single most important thing to a child. It is the first lesson in relationships with others and over time becomes the biggest pillar of support for an individual.”

The International Day of Families is observed on May 15 every year. The Family Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. It reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.

Noted thinkers, authors, celebrities and others have over the years acknowledged how important a family is, to a person’s life. In celebrating the beauty of a family on International Day of Families, our students of Class IV, showcased their talent and also their love for their families by working together on making a game of their own. While some students made a maze, others made a board game. In this time of Pandemic, where everyone is struggling with their emotions, our students have taught us today how to team up with our family members and gear up for a brighter global future.

It is rightly said - "A Happy Family is the backbone of a contented society.” May this world be our gigantic family bonded with peace, love and happiness.

The Earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.

The world is currently in the clutches of a global pandemic and due to lockdowns being implemented world over, the earth has been transforming and rejuvenating. For years, humans have ignored their responsibility of protecting Mother Earth and have relentlessly overwhelmed her with their actions. Through this pandemic, the nature seems to be reminding us of the weight of our deeds and abuse we have subjected our precious planet to. It is time now that we reflect on the consequences of our actions and devise plans so as to not devastate Earth further. With this purpose in mind, the students of Class 10 of St. Mark’s Girls Senior Secondary School expressed their thoughts and emotions through posters and poems on the topic - CORONA OR KARMA. The students beautifully articulated their opinions on the current global situation and took on the task of reflecting on their actions.

The future of the earth is in our hands and our own actions should not pose a threat to its future. Let us all realise our duty and take the first step of preserving our planet.

The Earth does not belong to us: we belong to the Earth.

The Earth is what we all have in common. We may be divided by boundaries, languages, religion but what unites us is one goal - caring for our planet.

Respecting and caring for Earth, our home, is the primary responsibility of every citizen. Promoting environmental activism and striking essential discussions about the wellbeing of our planet, the International Earth Day educates individuals across the world and inspires them to become responsible global citizens. To keep the spirit of environmentalism alive in students, it is essential that they realise their role in protecting our planet.

A number of activities were planned online to sensitize the students of St Mark’s Girls Senior Secondary School and make them feel more responsible towards the Mother Earth. The students of Classes IV and V were shown a video on the facts about Earth day, importance of the earth, and how they should take care of this planet.

The students of Classes VI to VIII were shown a video telling the students not to waste food and to be sensitive about the resources available. The video helped the students understand how Earth has changed over the years.

The students of Classes IX to XII were enlightened about the history of Earth Day through a video which also talked about the contributions of the founder of this day, Senator Gaylord Nelson.

The message that should reach everyone on the Earth Day, should be about the personal responsibility we all should share to ‘think globally and act locally’ as environmental stewards of planet Earth.

Heritage is the full range of our inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and culture. Most important, it is the range of contemporary activities, meanings, and behaviours that we draw from them.

A monument is a type of structure that was explicitly created to commemorate a person or event, or which has become relevant to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage, due to its artistic, historical, political, technical or architectural importance. Keeping the legacy of learning and imparting knowledge about our heritage, We at St. Mark's Girls Senior Secondary School celebrated the World Heritage Day on 17 April 2020 where students of Class IX were shown a wonderful presentation on the various UNESCO World Heritage Sites through online class. It was a learning experience for them. The students also made posters on the same while sitting at home during this lockdown period. This helped them to enrich their knowledge with an added pinch of leisure. This activity helped them learn about the conservation of heritage buildings because these monuments provide a sense of identity and continuity in a fast changing world for future generations.

The year 2020 seems a huge leap from the bygone times.

So much has undergone change in such little time. Nonetheless, man has found a way to cope to its surroundings every-time and made sure that our customs, culture and celebrations do not sacrifice in the face of trying times.

So, we at St. Mark’s Girls Sr. Sec. School, paying tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, celebrated his 129th birth anniversary, in a rather modern, technology driven way.

They were told about his life and massive contributions through a power point presentation, shown via the Microsoft Teams app. Children also prepared posters, displaying their love and devotion for this immaculate leader.

A few of them also spoke about his marvellous life efforts that he made to get equality to all classes of the Indian society. Our students left no tables unturned and participated with equal fervour in this virtual celebration as well.
